Review by the Editor of the
International Feltmakers' Journal: 'Echoes'
At last, not just a ‘how to do it’ book of felt projects but an in depth study for feltmakers. The book includes an excellent section on colour mixing, a demonstration of potential blends and different methods of dyeing for felt.
A chapter on line, shape and pattern leads us clearly from grids to working with cut pre-felt, traditional and contemporary design, printing, stitching and shibori.
The use of other fibres is also given a mention. Incorporating fibre ‘papers’ is said to add more control to the design although other fibres can also be laid on quite successfully as a thin layer.
A comparatively large section is dedicated to nuno felt, in line with the current focus on nuno felt for wearable. “Combining felt with fabric opens up many possibilities for design,” says Sheila.
Each section offers clear instructions for basic methods and materials needed. The glossy pages with large colour spreads are a delight to handle and the colours are truly sumptuous. A must have for those interested in furthering their skills. Sheila’s thorough felt research results as laid down in ’Felt to Stitch’ are to be highly recommended.
